Saving at home – Simple decorated cookies

Easy to prepare and perfect to give, these simple decorated cookies are a very sweet thought to customize according to the occasion! Romantic little hearts for Valentine’s Day, Christmas trees, stars and flowers for the Epiphany stocking of the little ones and, not least, the bunnies, doves and eggs in the form of delicious colored Easter cookies … with this recipe you can shape your creativity and make sweets to dedicate to the people you love.

Starting from a simple shortcrust pastry base, just choose the most suitable shapes to obtain delicious fragrant biscuits: but the funniest part will be to use the icing to decorate them, letting you be guided only by your imagination!

You can add food coloring to obtain a wide range of chromatic shades, or choose to use natural or chocolate glaze for an even more genuine version … in any case, your simple decorated biscuits will be more than appreciated because, as you know, a gift made with the heart is always better!

Let’s start:

SIMPLE DECORATED COOKIES

Ingredients for 50/60 biscuits: 300 g of flour 00 – 100 g icing sugar – 100 g cold butter – 2 medium cold eggs (about 110 g) – 1/2 lemon zest – 2 g baking powder for sweets.
For the glaze: 250 g icing sugar – 40 g water at room temperature – food dyes

Preparation:

To make the simple decorated biscuits, first prepare the pastry dough: pour the flour on the work surface together with the sugar and yeast, then add the grated lemon zest and diced butter. Work quickly with your fingertips until you get a fine and crumbly mixture, then pour the eggs and knead quickly for the time necessary to compact all the ingredients well.

Form the dough into a loaf, wrap it in plastic wrap and leave it to rest in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. After the rest time, place the dough on a sheet of parchment paper and beat it with a rolling pin to soften it, then cover with another sheet of parchment paper and spread it up to a thickness of 3-4 mm.

At this point you can choose your favorite shapes and cut the biscuits from the pastry obtained. Transfer the biscuits to a dripping pan lined with parchment paper, slightly apart from each other and bake in a preheated static oven at 180 ° for about 18-20 minutes.

Once cooked, let the biscuits cool on a wire rack and take care of the icing: pour the icing sugar into a bowl, add the water and mix with a teaspoon until a rather viscous cream is obtained.

If you want to make glazes of various colors, divide the mixture into several bowls and add a small amount of colorant for each, then transfer the various types of glaze into as many cones of parchment paper to which you will cut the tip.

When the biscuits have completely cooled down, you can make your decorations: you can start by drawing the outline of the biscuit, filling the inside and then using a plastic scoop for coffee or a toothpick to distribute the icing evenly.

Alternatively you can draw dots to color the petals and the center of a flower or take inspiration from the simple decorated cookies that we have made … in short, let your imagination run free and have fun!

STORAGE

These simple decorated cookies can be kept in a cool place, covered with a glass bell, for 3-4 days. If you prefer, you can prepare the cookies in advance and glaze them later. The glaze can be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature for 4-5 days, preferably covered with a damp cloth or plastic wrap.

ADVICE

If you are undecided about the type of dye to use, we advise you to choose gel dyes for your simple decorated biscuits because they have a better yield both in terms of color and consistency. Liquid dyes could make the glaze excessively soft, on the contrary those in powder would dry out the mixture. If you want to flavor your icing, you can use vanilla sugar or replace the water with lemon or orange juice! To make the dough with a mixer or a planetary mixer instead of by hand you can follow the indications of the shortcrust pastry recipe.
