Saving at home – Moussaka (Greece)

The Moussaka is a traditional Greek recipe made with eggplant and minced meat. In this recipe we used lamb but it is also possible to prepare the dish with minced beef or veal.

Let’s start:


Ingredients for 4 people: 2 eggplants – 500 grams of minced lamb (or other minced meat) – 1 onion – 1 clove of garlic – 1 bunch of herbs – olive oil. For tomato sauce – 5 tomatoes – 1 teaspoon tomato concentrate – salt – pepper – cinnamon. For white sauce: 15 g butter – 50 g flour – 500 ml milk – 1 egg


Wash the eggplants and cut into slices of about 1 cm. Arrange them on a baking pan, add a little salt, pepper and a drizzle of olive oil. Then bake in the oven at 200 º C for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile prepare the tomato sauce:

Put the oil in a pot, add the tomatoes without skin and cut into cubes. Now add salt, pepper, 1/2 teaspoon, the cinnamon and the tomato concentrate. Stir and let the preparation cook for 15 minutes over low heat.

In a pan fry the onion in oil. Then add the minced lamb and cook.

Now add the previously prepared tomato sauce, the garlic clove cut into small pieces and a bunch of aromatic herbs; then cook for 15 minutes over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

Now prepare the white sauce:

Melt the butter in a saucepan, then add the flour and stir well.

Stir the milk little by little, with the help of a whisk. Continue to stir until the mixture thickens.

Remove the pan from the heat, add an egg and beat strongly.

Take a baking pan and brush it with olive oil. Lay on the bottom half of the eggplants and then add the meat; then level.

Cover the surface with the remaining eggplants and finally pour the white sauce on the Moussaka.
Bake at 180° C for about 35 minutes, checking from time to time.

Your Moussaka is ready to be served!
